Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS)

What is AIMS?

AIMS – Association of International Marathons and Distance Races is the home of world running™. Working with the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) on all matters relating to international road races, AIMS’s objective is to foster and promote distance running throughout the world and exchange information, knowledge and expertise among members of the association. AIMS is also a member-based organization of more than 450 of the world’s leading distance races, from over 120 countries and territories.

Qualifying performances for World Championships & Olympic Games

The IAAF also has strict measurement criteria for courses that can be used for qualifying performances for World Championships and Olympic Games. Courses must be measured by an accredited IAAF-AIMS Grade A or B measurer and the elevation change must be less than 1m/km. Courses with a separation greater than 50 per cent qualification purposes.are eligible for qualification purposes.

AIMS History

AIMS was firmly established in May 1982 with its first Congress in London. Informal discussions had been held over the previous two years amongst some of the world’s leading marathon race directors with a view to setting up such an association. Meetings were held in New York, Honolulu and other venues prior to the formal meeting in London.

Manulife Danang International Marathon proudly is the first race measured and qualified by AIMS in Vietnam. Participants’ race result at Manulife Danang International Marathon is qualified to join other world races such as New York Marathon, Boston Marathon, etc.
